The races include OC-1 and OC-2 (one and two person outrigger canoes), SS-1 and SS-2 (surfski racing kayaks) and V-1 (rudderless outrigger canoe).
MPH is no longer able to accommodate SUP's due to the increased participants and the many races now available for SUP's.

EXPERIENCE & CUT-OFF TIME:
- This race is for experienced paddlers with open ocean experience only.
- Cutoff time: 4 hours and 30 minutes. If the MPH race directors believe you may not be able to make it close to 4:30, you may be required to have an escort boat (not jet ski), or your entry may be denied. The registration form includes a section for your open ocean racing experience.
- Your entry fee will be refunded if denied. Please email us if you're not sure. See pre-qualification rules below.
PRE-QUALIFICATION: Pre-qualify to determine if you are qualified to race and if an escort boat is required before registering by either:
- Email MPH for pre-approval based on your experience. Describe your experience including big open ocean races you've done, your times, and if possible, contact info for your coach as a reference.
- Completed one of the following races iron (or relay IF you are racing with same team), within specified time. OC-6 doesn't count. Note; If you haven't met the specified time, you may still qualify. You'll just need to get pre-approval as in #1 above.
- M2M in under 3:45
- North Shore Challenge - Keanae to Kahului in under 3:45
- North Shore Challenge - Maliko to Napili in under 4:15
- Kaiwi Solo in under 5:40
- If you do not pre-qualify to race without an escort boat, you can still race WITH an escort boat (which you are responsible for providing) as long as your experience shows you are likely able to complete the race in under the cutoff time of 4:30 in Maui's typical North Shore conditions.
- Cutoff time is required for safety so our safety boats don't get too spread out and so MPH can accurately account for all paddlers at end of race.
JERSEY's & LEASHES: You must wear a bright, highly visible Jersey for the duration of the race. This is for safety, and there are no exceptions. Failure to comply will result in a DQ and no time.
As with all MPH races, paddlers must have a leash on their boat & wear it at all times during the race. Failure to comply will result in a DQ.
ESCORT BOATS: Escort boats must be at least 17ft. NO Jet skis allowed for Escort. Escort boat waiver must be completed & received by MPH via mail by March 25 (MPH, P.O. Box 871, Haiku, HI, 96708) or via email (mphreg@gmail.com) at least 3 days prior to Race.
CARPOOLING & TRAILERING OF BOATS TO RACE START AT KEANAE OR MALIKO IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED : Parking is very limited at both locations & there will be no security provided for vehicles during the race.
MPH RACE RULES FOR THE 2018 NORTH SHORE CHALLENGE (NSC) RACE
Please familiarize yourself with the Race Rules. All participants will be expected to know them.
All paddlers participating in an MPH event must register prior to the registration deadline and must have current MPH boat number assigned & securely places on both sides of the nose of your OC or SS (sticker on deck & number marked on leg of Prone paddlers). Since we count paddlers, missing or extra paddlers may cause us to call for search and rescue assistance.
- All race participants must have and use a leash. All participants are encouraged to carry an alternative safety/rescue aid such as a whistle, reflective tape, personal flotation device (PFD), Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB), air horn, or smoke. Persons who do not use at least a leash will be DQ'd the first time, will be fined the second time and will be prohibited from participating if there is a 3rd offense.
- You must start behind the line or escort boat. Creeping forward or jumping the start will result in a time penalty specified for that race.
- You must finish inside of the finish buoy (unless conditions make it unsafe). Finishing in any other place will result in a non-time and resultant DQ.
- You must go around any required turn buoys. Failure to do so will result in disqualification.
- All boats, boards and other equipment must be in good operating condition. If you question whether your equipment can handle the conditions, you should not go out.
- For safety, you must wear a bright, visible jersey while racing. Whether or not a jersey qualifies is at the discretion of the race director. If conditions warrant, the race director may waive this rule and allow paddlers to race without a jersey, this will be announced on race morning. If the rule is waived, a bright visible jersey is still strongly recommended as conditions can change at any time, and good conditions do not guarantee safety.
- All vessels must use MPH issued number stickers.
- Be safe. Evaluate the conditions. Check the wind, currents, wave size and tidal reports. If in doubt of your ability to handle the conditions, do not take the course. There is no shame in helping from shore. Overestimating your ability puts yourself, other paddlers, and our escort patrol at risk. 'WHEN IN DOUBT - DON'T GO OUT!'
- The Race Director always has the right to alter a course, prohibit a racer from participating if their experience isn't sufficient for the course &/or conditions, or change any rule if the Race Director deems it necessary for the safety and well being of the sport and paddlers.
- The Safety Patrol and Race Director have the option of pulling a paddler from a race if the paddler is unable to stay on course or in safe range of other paddlers. If you are unsure your typical paddling speed will keep you in this range, please check with the Race Director prior to entering the race.
